For Primary 5 students (typically 11 years old). Children hitting synthesis, editing and cloze for the first time, where technique starts to separate grades before PSLE.
MOE syllabus alignment
Fully aligned to the MOE Primary 5 English Language syllabus (STELLAR-based). Reading and comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, writing and oral communication are taught to MOE expectations and exam formats, so the work supports school assessments directly.
What we cover at Primary 5
- Advanced comprehension: inferential and evaluative questions, author's purpose and tone
- Comprehension cloze and grammar cloze: using context clues and collocation
- Synthesis and transformation: joining and rewriting sentences without changing meaning
- Editing for grammar-in-context: spelling, tense, agreement and preposition errors in passages
- Visual text comprehension: posters, flyers and infographics
- Vocabulary for precision: strong verbs, sensory detail, show-not-tell descriptions
- Composition: planning to a picture prompt, writing a full narrative with a clear climax
- Situational writing: formal email and letter with purpose, audience and tone
- Oral: reading aloud technique and stimulus-based conversation with personal opinion
Class format and teachers

NIE-trained teachers
Your child's Primary 5 English class is taught by a current or ex-MOE teacher who has taught this level in a Singapore school. We do not publish teacher names or photos — a deliberate policy we explain in full on our teachers page.

Assess
We benchmark against P5 paper components: cloze, synthesis, editing, comprehension and composition.

Diagnose
A weak synthesis score is usually a grammar-pattern gap, not a comprehension problem. We test the patterns directly.

Target
Time goes to the two or three components losing the most marks, not an even sweep of the paper.

Practise
Pattern-by-pattern synthesis drills, editing passages weekly, and one planned composition each fortnight.

Review
Component-level scoring so you can see which section is moving and which is stuck.

From 21 Nov, lessons shift to School Year Prep for the next level (P1 prepares for P2, P6 prepares for Secondary 1, and so on) — same class, same slot, no separate signup.

Common FAQ
What is synthesis and transformation?
Rewriting or combining sentences without changing the meaning. It is pattern-based, so we drill the patterns one by one rather than practising randomly.
Editing and cloze are the biggest losses. Can they move fast?
Yes — both are among the fastest-improving components because they respond to technique and pattern recognition.
Is P5 English much harder than P4?
Yes. Evaluative comprehension, synthesis and formal situational writing all appear. Starting at P5 leaves a full year before PSLE.
How many children are in one class?
Five. Primary 5 classes are capped at 5 students so the teacher can speak to your child by name in every session. We only stretch to 7 when a student joins for a make-up lesson.
