For Primary 1 students (typically 7 years old). Children starting formal English who are still sounding out words, or who know letters but cannot yet blend them into confident reading.
MOE syllabus alignment
Fully aligned to the MOE Primary 1 English Language syllabus (STELLAR-based). Reading and comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, writing and oral communication are taught to MOE expectations and exam formats, so the work supports school assessments directly.
What we cover at Primary 1
- Phonics: consonant and short vowel sounds, blending CVC words, initial blends and digraphs
- Sight words: the first 100 high-frequency words read on sight, not sounded out
- Simple sentence construction: capital letter, subject, verb, full stop
- Singular and plural nouns, and the pronouns I, he, she, it, they
- Basic comprehension: reading a short text and answering direct 'who / what / where' questions
- Guided composition: writing 3–4 sentences about a single picture using a word bank
- Listening comprehension and following two-step spoken instructions
- Show-and-tell speaking: clear voice, eye contact, answering a follow-up question

NIE-trained teachers
Your child's Primary 1 English class is taught by a current or ex-MOE teacher who has taught this level in a Singapore school. We do not publish teacher names or photos — a deliberate policy we explain in full on our teachers page.
How the brainflex method works at Primary 1

Assess
We listen to your child read aloud. Decoding, sight-word recall and speaking confidence are checked as three separate things.

Diagnose
A P1 child who reads slowly is usually missing blending or sight words — rarely both. We name which one.
- 03
Target
Teaching starts with the sound or word set that is actually missing, not the whole phonics programme again.
- 04
Practise
Short, playful decoding and sentence-building drills, with a lot of speaking before any writing.

Review
Parents get a short note after each session on reading fluency and how many sentences your child wrote unaided.

Closed Sun 8 Nov and Mon 9 Nov 2026 for Deepavali (observed) and Fri 25 Dec 2026 for Christmas Day. No other public holiday falls in this term.
From 21 Nov, lessons shift to School Year Prep for the next level (P1 prepares for P2, P6 prepares for Secondary 1, and so on) — same class, same slot, no separate signup.

Common FAQ
My child knows letters but cannot read words yet.
That is a blending gap, and it is the most common P1 starting point. We rebuild blending before pushing sight words or writing.
Is two hours too long for a 7-year-old?
The session is split into short segments — reading aloud, a game-based phonics drill, speaking and a short writing task — so attention resets several times.
Do you teach spelling lists?
We teach the spelling patterns behind the list rather than rote memorising it, so new words your child has never seen are still readable.
How many children are in one class?
Five. Primary 1 classes are capped at 5 students so the teacher can speak to your child by name in every session. We only stretch to 7 when a student joins for a make-up lesson.
